5 Things to Bring to an IEP Meeting

These are tips from my years as a special education teacher! I want to help you have a winning IEP experience!

  1. Bring something yummy!
One way to build a relationship is by breaking bread together. Teachers often get to school early and leave late during IEP meetings. Bringing a small breakfast item (baked goods or fruit) can go a long way in showing goodwill and raising the mood!

  2. Bring support
Invite grandparents, your BCBA, or a best friend to support you. I’ve seen as many as 12 school team members show up to an IEP meeting! While they are all on your child’s team, it can be overwhelming.

  3. Bring hope
Your child is wonderfully and beautifully made!
Your child is capable of greatness!
Your child is learning new things!
Your child has a team of people who want to help!
We are having this meeting to plan for the amazing year ahead!

  4. Bring homework
Could you test out the goals in the IEP ahead of time? For example, it says that your child needs to learn 24/27 letters. Grab some letter flashcards and see for yourself! How many letters do they know? Is the school getting a different result? If so, why?

  5. Bring confidence
You are a superhero, and you know what is best for your child. There will be a lot of experts around that IEP table, but you are your child's expert.
